Working in Cambridge

## The housing in Cambridge, and what it needs
Cambridge housing puts more weight on appearance than almost anywhere else we work. Victorian terraces in Romsey and Petersfield, substantial Edwardian and interwar villas on the roads out through Newnham and Chesterton, and then large modern developments at Trumpington, Eddington and Cambourne on the edge of the city.

On the older streets the frontage is small, the brick is characterful, and the wrong paving in the wrong colour is immediately obvious from the road. On the newer developments the issue is usually the opposite: bare, compacted plots that need levels, drainage and a proper base before anything can be laid.

Both need the same underlying discipline. The surface is chosen to suit the house, and everything under it, from excavation and sub-base to edgings and drainage, is done properly, because that is what decides whether it still looks right in ten years.

Common jobs here

## What Cambridge homeowners usually call about

### Small frontages, high standards
Terraced frontages here are tight, visible and often next to a neighbour's. The paving pattern, the edge detail and the colour against the brick all get decided before anything is laid.

### Off-street parking conversions
Turning a front garden into parking is common in Cambridge, and it has to be built to carry a vehicle, drain properly and not push water onto the footpath.

### Courtyard gardens and porcelain
Small, enclosed city gardens suit porcelain paving, which stays clean in shade and does not green over the way some surfaces do.

### New-build plots at the edge of the city
Homes at Trumpington, Eddington and Cambourne are often handed over with heavily compacted ground and no patio at all, which means starting with levels and drainage.

Local conditions

## The problems that come with building in Cambridge
Ground, drainage, building age and access all change what a job needs. These are the things we look at when we come out to you.

### Shaded, enclosed gardens
City gardens hemmed in by walls and neighbouring buildings stay damp and dark. Natural turf struggles in them, and surfaces that hold water go green quickly, which is where artificial grass and porcelain earn their place.

### Period properties and levels
On Victorian and Edwardian houses the finished level outside has to stay clear of the damp course. Building a patio up to meet a back door is a common and expensive mistake.

### Ground that moves
Seasonal shrink and swell in the local ground is exactly why base depth and compaction decide how flat a surface stays. It is the layer nobody sees that does the work.

Coverage

## The Cambridge area we cover
We work across Cambridge: Romsey, Petersfield, Mill Road, Newnham, Chesterton, Cherry Hinton, Trumpington and Eddington, and out into the South Cambridgeshire villages and Cambourne. The city sits at the eastern edge of our area, alongside Huntingdon and St Neots, both of which we cover.

Access is often the deciding factor in how a Cambridge job runs. Narrow frontages, on-street parking and restricted entries all get worked out at the site visit so the work does not stall halfway through.

Choosing a surface

## What tends to suit Cambridge homes
Appearance carries more weight here than anywhere else we work, so the surface gets chosen against the building. Clay or concrete block paving in a restrained colour usually sits better on a Victorian frontage than a modern seamless finish. Resin bound suits later and modern properties, drains well and gives a clean line where a frontage is small. In gardens, porcelain is the most reliable choice for shaded city plots because it does not green over the way some stone does, and artificial grass solves the very common problem of a small enclosed lawn that never gets enough light to establish. Martin will tell you honestly if a surface you like is the wrong one for your particular ground or aspect.

Common questions

## Cambridge: questions we get asked
Do you work in Cambridge?Yes, across the city and the surrounding South Cambridgeshire villages.

How much does a patio cost in Cambridge?Prices depend on the size of the area, the surface you choose and what has to be dug out first, so every job in Cambridge is quoted after a site visit rather than priced over the phone. The visit and the quote are free and carry no obligation.

Do you take a deposit? No. There is no deposit and no payment of any kind until the job is finished and you are happy with it. We buy all the materials ourselves up front. They simply stay ours until the job is paid for, which is what lets us ask nothing of you until the work is finished.

Is the work guaranteed? All our work carries a 5-year workmanship guarantee covering everything but fair wear and tear, given directly by us rather than through a third-party scheme.

Can you help choose paving that suits a period house?Yes. Martin helps with the design side, choosing colours, patterns and surfaces that sit properly with the brickwork rather than fighting it.

My garden is small and shaded: what works best?Porcelain paving stays clean in shade and does not hold water the way some surfaces do, and artificial grass works where natural turf will never establish. We will tell you honestly which suits your garden.

Can you convert my front garden to parking?Yes, built to carry a vehicle, with edgings and drainage set so water is taken away rather than pushed onto the path.

Do you clear the waste away?Yes: excavated spoil and the old surface go with us, and the site gets a full clean-up.

How do I book a quote?Call or message Martin to arrange a visit. Quotes are free and there is no obligation.
